Axl Joy Mendoza’s angelic face did not show her struggle with retina blastula or cancer of the eye. At a tender age of two, her left eye was extracted. Unfortunately, the cancer had spread to her right eye which led to total blindness. She was given only six months to live after the surgery. But through god’s miracle, Axl is now 19 years old and has recently completed her high school education.

Mina, Jealene Cristel:
Wants to take English Language Course
Congenital glaucoma runs in the family with Jealene’s totally blind father and her younger sibling who has recently been totally blind. It may sound that blindness is the norm in the family but accepting blindness is a personal journey. When Jaelene lost whatever vision she had, she was still in denial But her father led her to realize that she, too, can lead a normal life like her father. In 2013, Jaelene completed ATRIEV’s basic computer literacy course through the sponsorship of ADB Staff Community Fund.

Marcelino, Crisanta
Wants to take English Language Course
When Cris was only three months old, her left eyeball was removed to arrest the spread of cancer cells. Unfortunately, at age three, her right eye was also removed. The radiation and cobalt therapy on Cris’s eyes took a toll on the family’s finances forcing the family to move to Dagupan, Pangasinan where cost of living was much lower. In 2013, Cris attended ATRIEV’s basic computer literacy training through the sponsorship of Liliane Foundation Phils. Her ATRIEV training prepared her for her present course in IT.

Nagutom, Camille
Wants to take PC Operations with Access Technology
At age 24, Camille is only in her 2nd year high school. Her parents have to take every precaution in all of Camille’s activities because she has a shant in her brain due to hydrocephalus. Despite her delicate situation, Camille wants to finish her studies and become independent. Through the computer skills, Camille may be able to work someday even if she’s at home.

Gabriel, Jennie Lyn
Wants to take PC Operations with Access Technology
Jennie is a graduate of Communication Arts in Olongapo city. Despite her low vision caused by brain tumor, Jennie believes that she can be productive. She wants to learn the needed computer skills that will help her find a job.
